New Jersey Cities in the 1990s: An Updated Employment Report Card

In the post-recession years of the 1990s, aggregate urban growth resumed. This was mainly due to the powerful economic performance of Jersey City, which has distanced itself economically from the rest of urban New Jersey.

…narrowing of the urban-nonurban growth differential in the 1992-1995 recovery...was due to the extraordinary economic rebound of Jersey City in the post-recession 1990s.

Virtually all of the urban “rebirth” has occurred in Jersey City, which has accounted for 91 percent (10,200 jobs out of 11,300) of the urban employment gains…

Jersey City stands particularly noteworthy; its 1995 employment level was at a 20-year high. Every other city was at or near a 20-year low.

The current economic recovery is still underway but of the “big six” cities only Jersey City has made significant private-sector employment advances.

As the individual city data …reveal, virtually all of the urban “rebirth” has been the province of Jersey City which accounted for 91 percent (10,200 jobs out of 11,300 jobs) of the urban employment gains… The vast inventory of waterfront office space began to fill up quite smartly. The key, of course, for all of urban new Jersey is to identify elements similar to those that spurred Jersey City (sic) economy and replicate and adapt them to individual situations in the state’s other urban areas.

However, Jersey City actually secured significant gains in employment share …, a reflection of its uniquely high rate of job growth…

The challenge is to identify and then leverage the special economic attributes of each city into a successful overall environment for private sector growth and investment, and thus replicate the Jersey City experience on a wider basis.
